Even today, many smaller farmers use cheaper or used round baler machines, which only have the standard twine tying equipment. This method of binding is no longer as common, it is still used though. The original system used double binding which took about 20 seconds to wrap one package. Usually there was a possibility to set the twine to 14, 17, 19 or 22 "wraps" according to the diameter of the pulley. Thanks to the efforts of speeding up the process, the baler manufacturers increased the number of twine spools in the feeder from 2 to 4, which increased the consumption of thin twines, but at the same time reduced the time required for the overall packaging process. However, it is necessary to follow the recommendation of the baler manufacturer, which specifies the type of twine.
One of the advantages of twine for round bales over netting is the fact that the twine can be more easily pulled out of the bales if they are stored outdoors in winter (at sub-zero temperatures). When the net freezes, there is a risk that it will start to tear and the rests will remain in the feed, endangering cattle’s health.
